Gerhard Richter at the Fondation Louis Vuitton
From October 17, 2025, to March 2, 2026, the Fondation Louis Vuitton will host an extraordinary retrospective dedicated to Gerhard Richter, one of the most influential painters of the 20th and 21st centuries. This unprecedented exhibition brings together nearly 270 works, retracing over sixty years of artistic creation, including paintings, sculptures, watercolors, drawings, and overpainted photographs.
The German artist, born in Dresden in 1932, has left a profound mark on the history of contemporary art with his unique approach to painting, moving fluidly between figuration and abstraction. After fleeing East Germany in 1961, he settled in Düsseldorf and later in Cologne, where he still lives and works today.
In line with major exhibitions dedicated to Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mark Rothko, Joan Mitchell, and David Hockney, the Fondation Louis Vuitton devotes all its spaces to Richter. Visitors are invited to follow a chronological journey highlighting the key stages of his career:
-
1962–1970: paintings based on photographs and early color charts
-
1971–1975: explorations of representation with 48 Portraits
-
1976–1986: abstract works and portraits of his daughter Betty
-
1987–1995: the dark series October 18, 1977, on loan from MoMA
-
1996–2009: figurative paintings, experiments, and the Cage series
-
2009–2023: his final works, including the powerful Birkenau series
The exhibition also showcases Richter’s experiments with glass, digital works, and his last abstract paintings, created before he stopped painting in 2017.
